About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Network Access is about how devices connect to the network at Layer 2, and how wireless clients join it.

It covers the switching technologies that organise a campus network, and the wireless components that extend it to devices without a cable.

The chapter follows domain 2.0 of the Cisco CCNA 200-301 version 1.1 exam topics. It has nine published objectives, and each gets its own page.

Weight in the exam

Domain 2.0 carries about 20 percent of the published exam objectives.

It is level with Network Fundamentals as the second-largest domain, behind IP Connectivity. The wired switching topics involve many configuration commands. The wireless topics involve concepts and reading a controller interface.

How the topics fit together

The first half of the chapter is wired switching, and the second half is wireless.

VLANsseparate networkscarried byTrunksmany VLANs per linkbundled byEtherChannelone logical linkkept loop free bySpanning TreeAccess pointwireless sideplugs intoSwitch portVLAN, trunk, PoEreachesControllermanages the WLAN

The wired topics build in a sensible order:

  • VLANs divide a switch into separate networks.
  • Trunking carries those VLANs between switches.
  • CDP and LLDP help you discover what is connected to what.
  • EtherChannel combines parallel links into one logical link for more bandwidth and resilience.
  • Spanning Tree keeps all of this redundancy from creating loops, and the protection features keep it safe.

The wireless topics start with the architectures and AP modes that decide how access points are managed. They then look at the physical connections between APs, controllers and switches, and at the ways to manage the devices securely. The final page covers creating a WLAN in the controller's graphical interface.

Note

A wireless AP plugs into a switch port, so the VLAN, trunk and PoE settings from the first half decide whether the wireless side works.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with diagrams and example commands.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorise.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three prompts to test your understanding.

The wired topics reward hands-on practice in a simulator or lab. For the wireless topics, spend time reading controller screens and matching settings to what they do.
