About this chapter
What this chapter covers
Database Management and Platform Security is 30% of the ServiceNow Certified System Administrator exam, the largest domain. It covers how data is stored in tables and fields, who may touch that data, how data gets in from outside, how configuration items are modeled, and who is responsible for keeping the instance secure.
Questions are short scenarios or recall questions: a requirement is described and you pick the table, field type, role, ACL, import feature or responsibility owner that fits. Some are single-answer and some are multiple-select questions that state the count, such as "(Choose two.)". There are no exhibits.
Import sets and transform maps belong to this chapter. They are not in the Data Migration and Integration chapter, which covers UI policies, business rules, update sets and scripting.
How the topics fit together
Everything on ServiceNow is a record in a table, so the schema comes first. Access control then decides who can read or change those records. Import sets bring in outside data, the CMDB is a specialized set of tables for the things IT manages, and Security Center and the shared responsibility model close the chapter by asking who keeps the whole instance safe.
- Schema questions ask which table, field type or extension fits.
- Security questions ask which of role, group, ACL or application setting fits.
- Import questions follow the order: data source, staging table, transform map, target table.
- CMDB questions ask which feature identifies, reconciles or relates configuration items.
When two answers both sound like security, ask whether the requirement is about who can open a record (ACL) or about how a form behaves on screen (UI policy). The ACL is enforced on the server; the UI policy is not a security control.
How to use these pages
Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.
- What it is: the idea in plain words.
- How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
- What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize and how questions are phrased.
- Common mistakes: the classic traps.
- Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
