About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Data Communication Network Basics is 10% of the Huawei HCIA-Datacom H12-811 exam. It covers what a data communication network is, the devices that build it, how data moves from one host to another, the work of network engineers, the OSI and TCP/IP reference models with their standard protocols, the Huawei VRP operating system, and how to log in to and configure a device.

Questions are single-answer, multiple-answer without a stated count, true/false, drag and drop and typed fill-in-the-blank. Many are "Which of the following statements is true?", and some show a topology figure or a few lines of VRP output.

It has 9 outline topics, and three pages cover them.

How the topics fit together

The chapter moves from the big picture to your first commands on a real device.

Network and devicesswitches, routers, firewallsData flowencapsulate and decapsulateReference modelsOSI and TCP/IP layersVRPviews and command levelsLog in and configureconsole, Telnet, STelnet

The first page names the parts of a network and the people who build it. The second explains the layered models that every later chapter uses, and the third takes you into the VRP command line.

Exam tip

Memorize the PDU name at each layer (data, segment, packet, frame, bit), the well-known ports (FTP 20 and 21, SSH 22, Telnet 23, SMTP 25, DNS 53, TFTP 69, HTTP 80, HTTPS 443), and the four VRP command levels 0 to 3.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.

Try to answer each "Which of the following statements is true?" example before reading the answer. The exam often swaps one word, such as a layer name or a view, to make a statement false.
