About this chapter
What this chapter covers
Ethernet Technology Basics is 20% of the Huawei HCIA-Datacom H12-811 exam. It covers the Ethernet protocol and frame formats, how a switch learns MAC addresses and forwards frames, VLANs and the access, trunk and hybrid port types, STP and its successors RSTP and MSTP, and link aggregation with Eth-Trunk in manual and LACP mode.
Questions are single-answer, multiple-answer without a stated count, true/false, drag and drop and typed fill-in-the-blank. Many are "Which of the following statements is true?", and many show a switch topology figure or VRP display output such as display vlan, display stp brief or display eth-trunk.
It has 16 outline topics, and five pages cover them.
How the topics fit together
The chapter builds a switched LAN step by step: first single switches, then segments, then redundant links.
VLANs need tagged frames, redundant links between switches need STP to stop loops, and link aggregation adds bandwidth without creating a loop that STP must block.
Memorize the numbers the exam loves: MAC aging time 300 seconds, VLAN IDs 1 to 4094, a 4-byte 802.1Q tag with TPID 0x8100, STP bridge priority 32768 in steps of 4096, port priority 128 in steps of 16, timers 2, 15 and 20 seconds, and LACP priorities 32768.
How to use these pages
Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.
- What it is: the idea in plain words.
- How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
- What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize.
- Common mistakes: the classic traps.
- Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
Try to work out the root bridge, the port roles or the frame handling yourself before reading the answer. The exam often gives a topology and asks which port is blocked or which VLAN a frame ends up in.
