About this chapter
What this chapter covers
Standards and Concepts gives you the basic vocabulary of networking.
It explains how network communication is organised into layers, how performance is described, how networks are sized and shaped, and how cloud services fit in. It ends with the protocols that everyday applications use.
Later chapters build on these ideas, so it is worth learning them well. The chapter is written for beginners, and every term is explained.
How the topics fit together
The pages move from the big picture down to the individual protocols.
The first page introduces the OSI and TCP/IP models. They give you a map of layers that you will use in every other chapter.
The second page covers bandwidth, throughput and latency, the terms used to describe how well a network performs. The third page names the types of network and the shapes they take.
The fourth page compares cloud and on premises services. The last two pages cover TCP and UDP, and then the application protocols that run on top of them.
The layer model on the first page is the thread through the whole guide. When you meet a new device or protocol, ask which layer it works at.
How to use these pages
Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.
- What it is: the idea in plain words.
- How it works: the mechanism, with diagrams, tables and example commands.
- What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorise.
- Common mistakes: the classic traps.
- Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
Read the pages in order the first time. Then use the exam facts and the questions for revision.
