About this chapter

What this chapter covers

This chapter is about taking an application from your laptop to a running, protected service.

It covers where applications run, how they are packaged, how they are tested and released, and how they are kept safe. It also introduces Bash, the shell that ties many of these tasks together.

The topics are the everyday skills of a developer who works close to the network.

How the topics fit together

A change travels from code, through tests and a build, into a package, and out to an environment that is protected by network services.

The first two pages describe the places and forms of deployment: private, public, hybrid and edge, and then bare metal, virtual machines and containers. The pipeline page shows how a commit is built, tested and released, and how DevOps ties the people and the tools together.

The unit test page shows the checks that the pipeline runs. The Docker page shows how an application is packaged into an image and run on your own machine.

Security and network services cover the protection around that application. The security page deals with secrets, encryption and the OWASP threats.

The network services page explains how DNS, firewalls, load balancers and reverse proxies shape the path of a request. The Bash page covers the commands that you use throughout.

Note

Containers appear in several pages. Learn them once, and the Docker, CI/CD and deployment topics will all connect.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with diagrams and short examples.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorise.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.

Install Docker and Python on your own machine, and run every example. Building an image and breaking a unit test on purpose will teach you more than reading about them. For the security page, learn each attack together with its defence.
