About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Govern is 35% of the ServiceNow CIS-DF exam, the largest domain by far. It covers how an organization keeps CMDB data trustworthy after it has been loaded: who owns the data, how its quality is measured, how stale and duplicate CIs are cleaned up, and which tools the CMDB team works in every day.

Most questions are "given a scenario" questions: a data problem or a governance goal is described and you pick the metric, policy, role, dashboard or remediation that fits. Some are single-answer, some are multiple-select questions that state the count, such as "(Choose two.)", and some are drag-and-drop matching. There are no exhibits.

Identification and reconciliation rules belong to the Ingest chapter. Govern asks what happens when that data goes wrong over time, and how you measure and fix it.

Governance starts with people and agreements: why the CMDB exists, which classes are in scope and who owns them. Measurement comes next, because you cannot improve what you do not score.

Cleanup tools then act on what the scores reveal, and CMDB Workspace is where all of it is done. Principal classes and life cycle fields keep the data consistent for the processes that consume it.

  • Governance questions ask for a goal, a requirement or the role that owns a task.
  • Health questions ask which of the six metrics a problem lowers, or how to set up a KPI.
  • Data Manager questions ask which policy type fits: retire, archive, delete, attestation or certification.
  • Duplicate questions ask why duplicates appeared and how a de-duplication task is remediated.
  • Workspace questions ask where a feature lives and who can use it.
Exam tip

Read the scenario for the verb. "Measure" or "score" points to CMDB Health or the Data Foundations Dashboard; "retire", "archive", "delete" or "confirm it still exists" points to a Data Manager policy; "two records for one server" points to de-duplication.
