About this chapter
What this chapter covers
Ingest is 19% of the ServiceNow CIS-DF exam. It covers how data gets into the CMDB and stays upgradeable: choosing between Discovery, Service Graph Connectors, IntegrationHub ETL, import sets and the IRE API, automating those feeds, populating relationships, maintaining CIs and attributes that no tool can discover, recording compliance identifiers on the right CSDM objects, and keeping assets and CIs aligned.
Questions are mostly "given a scenario" items: a data source or requirement is described and you pick the ingestion method, relationship mechanism or ownership model that fits. Some are single-answer, some are multiple-select questions that state the count, such as "(Choose two.)", and some are drag-and-drop matching. There are no exhibits.
Discovery and Service Mapping appear only as data sources. You need to know what they populate, not how to configure them.
How the topics fit together
Every method should end at the IRE, so the first decision is which path fits the source. Tools that discover or connect bring CIs and many relationships with them. What remains, such as racks, owners or business context, is maintained by people with a governed process. Finally, the CMDB has to agree with the asset records and carry the compliance context that audits ask for.
- Method questions ask which ingestion path fits a source and keeps the IRE in play.
- Upgradeability questions ask which choice avoids custom work that breaks on upgrade.
- Relationship questions ask which relationships tools create and which people add by hand.
- Manual data questions ask how to keep non discoverable CIs current and trusted.
- Alignment questions ask how assets and CIs stay in sync and where compliance identifiers belong.
When a scenario names a common third-party tool, check first whether a Service Graph Connector exists for it. A store-delivered connector usually beats a custom import on upgradeability.
