About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Insight is 20% of the ServiceNow CIS-DF exam. It covers how you get value back out of the CMDB once the data is in and governed: why the business cares, how to ask the CMDB questions, how to see dependencies on a map, and how to measure whether the data foundation is good enough for the products that rely on it.

Questions are mostly "given a scenario" questions: a team wants an answer, a report or a map, and you pick the tool, query type or dashboard that fits. Some are single-answer, some are multiple-select questions that state the count, such as "(Choose two.)", and some are drag-and-drop matching. There are no exhibits.

The tools here read CMDB data; they do not fix it. Fixing duplicates, staleness and missing attributes belongs to the Govern chapter, even when a dashboard in this chapter is where you first notice the problem.

The CMDB earns its keep through the products that consume it, so the chapter starts with value and outcomes. Queries and reports then answer specific questions, the Unified Map shows how CIs connect, and the Data Foundations dashboards tell you whether the data is trustworthy enough to support all of it.

  • Value questions ask which product outcome depends on which CMDB data.
  • Query questions ask whether to use natural language, a CMDB query, a Service Mapping query or a CMDB 360 query.
  • Map questions ask which part of the Unified Map shows the information a role needs.
  • Dashboard questions ask which metric or playbook guides the next step.
Exam tip

When a scenario asks "which tool", check what the user wants back. A list of rows is a query, a picture of dependencies is the Unified Map, and a score with remediation guidance is the Data Foundations dashboard.
