About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Designing and Creating an Application is 20% of the ServiceNow Certified Application Developer exam. It covers the decisions a developer makes before and while building a custom application: whether the platform is the right home for it, how its tables and fields are laid out, how users reach it through the application navigator, and how application scope keeps it separate from everything else.

Questions are short scenarios, recall questions or code-reading questions: a requirement is described and you pick the table design, module setting, scope behavior or fit decision that matches. Some are single-answer and some are multiple-select questions that state the count, such as "(Choose two.)". There are no exhibits.

A developer first decides whether the requirement suits a platform built on records and processes. The data model comes next, because forms, lists, scripts and security all hang off tables. Modules then expose those tables to users, and scope wraps every artifact in one named, protected application.

  • Fit questions describe a business need and ask whether ServiceNow suits it, or which trait makes it a good or poor fit.
  • Data model questions ask whether to extend a table, which field type to use, or how to relate two tables.
  • Module questions ask which link type, filter or role setting gives users the right entry point.
  • Scope questions ask what the namespace looks like, which scope a file lands in, and how another scope may use your artifacts.
Exam tip

Before you create anything, check the application picker. A table or script created while the wrong application is selected belongs to that application, not to the one you meant to build.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize and how questions are phrased.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
