About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Managing Products with Agility is the third focus area group Scrum.org lists for PSPO I, and the largest. Its focus areas are forecasting and release planning, product vision, product value, Product Backlog management, business strategy and stakeholders and customers. Together they describe the Product Owner's daily job: deciding what is worth building next and proving that it delivered value.

The Scrum Guide 2020 covers Product Backlog management, the Product Goal, the Sprint Review and releasing Increments. Vision, strategy and value measurement go beyond the Scrum Guide; for those, these pages use Scrum.org guidance such as Evidence-Based Management and say so.

How the topics fit together

Visionwhy the product existsStrategy and Product GoalOrdered Product BacklogIncrements releasedMeasure value with stakeholdersAdapt

The vision gives a direction, the strategy and Product Goal give a target, and the Product Backlog turns them into work. Each released Increment is a chance to measure value and adapt the plan.

Exam tip

The Scrum Guide does not prescribe tools such as user stories, story points, roadmaps or canvases. Options claiming Scrum requires them are usually wrong; options saying teams may use them are usually right.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorise and how questions are phrased.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
