Understanding and Applying the Scrum Framework

The Product Owner may take part in the Daily Scrum when working on Sprint Backlog items.
  • A. True Correct answer
  • B. False

True. The Daily Scrum is for the Developers, but the Scrum Guide says that if the Product Owner or Scrum Master are actively working on items in the Sprint Backlog, they participate as Developers. Working on Sprint Backlog items is exactly the condition that makes their attendance appropriate.

Which three pillars uphold empirical process control in Scrum?
  • A. Prediction, control and reporting
  • B. Planning, inspection and adaptation
  • C. Transparency, inspection and adaptation Correct answer
  • D. Courage, focus and openness

Option C is correct because the Scrum Guide says empirical process control rests on transparency, inspection and adaptation. Options A, B and D name other terms: prediction and reporting, planning, and courage, focus and openness are not the three pillars (courage, focus and openness are among the five Scrum Values).

While building a payment feature, the Developers discover that their chosen design will not scale. They change the design to keep the Sprint Goal within reach. Which element of empiricism is the change of design?
  • A. Inspection
  • B. Forecasting
  • C. Adaptation Correct answer
  • D. Transparency

Option C is correct because adaptation means adjusting the work or the approach when inspection shows a problem; here the Developers change the design to protect the Sprint Goal. Inspection is the act of discovering the problem, and transparency is making it visible. Forecasting is not one of the three pillars.

A Scrum Team reports progress in a monthly status document that few stakeholders read, and the Developers keep their working notes private. Those doing and receiving the work cannot see its real state. Which pillar of empiricism is weakened most directly?
  • A. Self-management
  • B. Inspection
  • C. Adaptation
  • D. Transparency Correct answer

Option D is correct because transparency means the emergent process and work are visible to those performing and receiving the work. Hidden notes and an unread status document undermine that. Inspection and adaptation depend on transparency, so they are weakened as a consequence, and self-management is not a pillar of empiricism.

Which statement about the Product Owner role is correct according to the Scrum Guide?
  • A. The Scrum Master holds the role when nobody else is available
  • B. The Developers elect one of themselves to hold the role each Sprint
  • C. A committee of stakeholders can hold the role when they disagree
  • D. One person holds the role and may represent many stakeholders Correct answer

Option D is correct because the Guide states that the Product Owner is one person, not a committee, who may represent the needs of many stakeholders in the Product Backlog. The role is not filled by the Scrum Master by default, elected by the Developers each Sprint, or held by a committee.

What are two purposes of the Sprint Review? (Choose two.)
  • A. Plan the Developers' work for the next 24 hours
  • B. Obtain management approval to release the Increment
  • C. Inspect the outcome of the Sprint with stakeholders Correct answer
  • D. Determine what to adapt in the work ahead Correct answer
  • E. Examine how the Scrum Team worked together

Options C and D are correct because the Sprint Review exists to inspect the outcome of the Sprint with stakeholders and to determine what to adapt in the work ahead. Planning the next 24 hours belongs to the Daily Scrum, release approval is not a Sprint Review gate, and examining how the team worked together is the purpose of the Sprint Retrospective.

Which two statements about the Sprint Review are true? (Choose two.)
  • A. It replaces the Daily Scrum on the last day of the Sprint
  • B. The Scrum Master ensures it takes place and stays within the timebox Correct answer
  • C. It follows the Sprint Retrospective as the final event of the Sprint
  • D. It is the second-to-last event of the Sprint Correct answer
  • E. Its timebox is the same for a two-week and a one-month Sprint

Options B and D are correct because the Scrum Master ensures all Scrum events take place and stay within their timebox, and the Sprint Review is the second-to-last event, followed by the Sprint Retrospective that concludes the Sprint. It does not replace the Daily Scrum, and its maximum length scales with the Sprint (four hours for a one-month Sprint, shorter for shorter Sprints).

Developing People and Teams

In Scrum, what does it mean for the Scrum Team to be self-managing?
  • A. The Product Owner assigns tasks and the Developers choose the order
  • B. The Scrum Master sets each person's work for the Sprint
  • C. The Scrum Team decides internally who does what, when, and how Correct answer
  • D. The Developers choose their tasks while a manager approves the plan

Option C is correct because a self-managing Scrum Team decides internally who does what, when, and how, rather than being directed from outside. Options A, B and D place that decision with the Product Owner, the Scrum Master or a manager, which contradicts self-management.

A newly appointed Product Owner asks who owns the Sprint Backlog. Which answer is correct?
  • A. The Scrum Team shares it, and the Product Owner approves every change
  • B. The Product Owner owns it and updates it after each Daily Scrum
  • C. The Scrum Master owns it and keeps it current for the whole team
  • D. The Developers own it and adapt it each day toward the Sprint Goal Correct answer

Option D is correct because the Sprint Backlog is a plan by and for the Developers, who adapt it throughout the Sprint toward the Sprint Goal. The Product Owner and Scrum Master do not own it or need to approve its changes, so options A, B and C are wrong.

Which accountability belongs to the Scrum Master?
  • A. Deciding how the Developers turn Product Backlog items into an Increment
  • B. Coaching the Scrum Team in self-management and cross-functionality Correct answer
  • C. Ordering Product Backlog items so that value is maximized
  • D. Approving the Sprint Backlog before the Developers start the Sprint

Option B is correct because the Scrum Master is accountable for the team's effectiveness, including coaching it in self-management and cross-functionality. Deciding how work is done belongs to the Developers (A), ordering the Product Backlog to the Product Owner (C), and no one approves the Sprint Backlog for the Developers (D).

Why does Scrum expect a Scrum Team to be cross-functional?
  • A. Members are borrowed from functional departments whenever a Sprint needs their skills
  • B. Members together have all the skills needed to create value each Sprint Correct answer
  • C. Specialists outside the Scrum Team take over the testing and release activities
  • D. Every member is able to do any other member's work to the same standard

Option B is correct because the Scrum Guide describes a cross-functional team as one whose members together have all the skills necessary to create value each Sprint. It does not require every member to do everyone's work (D), nor does it rely on outside specialists or borrowed members (A, C).

Which two statements about the composition of a Scrum Team are correct? (Choose two.)
  • A. It is divided into sub-teams by technical specialty
  • B. It normally has between 15 and 20 members
  • C. It consists of one Scrum Master, one Product Owner and Developers Correct answer
  • D. It is directed by a project manager who assigns the work
  • E. It has no sub-teams or hierarchies within it Correct answer

Options C and E are correct because a Scrum Team consists of one Scrum Master, one Product Owner and Developers, with no sub-teams or hierarchies. It is typically 10 or fewer people, not 15 to 20 (B), and it is neither split by specialty (A) nor directed by a project manager (D).

Which two statements about accountability in Scrum are correct? (Choose two.)
  • A. The Scrum Master is accountable for maximizing the value of the product
  • B. The Product Owner is accountable for planning each Developer's daily work
  • C. The Developers are accountable for ordering the Product Backlog
  • D. The whole Scrum Team is accountable for creating a valuable, useful Increment each Sprint Correct answer
  • E. The Scrum Master is accountable for the Scrum Team's effectiveness Correct answer

Options D and E are correct because the whole Scrum Team is accountable for creating a valuable, useful Increment every Sprint, and the Scrum Master is accountable for the Scrum Team's effectiveness. Maximizing the value of the product belongs to the Product Owner (A), ordering the Product Backlog is a Product Owner accountability rather than the Developers' (C), and the Product Owner does not plan each Developer's daily work (B).

The Scrum Master coaches team members in self-management and cross-functionality.
  • A. True Correct answer
  • B. False

The Scrum Master does coach team members in self-management and cross-functionality. The Scrum Guide lists this among the ways the Scrum Master serves the Scrum Team, alongside helping it focus on high-value Increments and removing impediments to its progress.

Managing Products with Agility

The Sprint Review is an event where the Scrum Team and key stakeholders inspect the outcome of the Sprint.
  • A. True Correct answer
  • B. False

True. The Sprint Review is held near the end of the Sprint, where the Scrum Team and key stakeholders inspect the outcome of the Sprint and determine future adaptations.

Which statement best describes a forecast in Scrum?
  • A. A prediction refined as more is learned Correct answer
  • B. A contract between the Product Owner and stakeholders
  • C. A fixed commitment to scope and date
  • D. A plan the Scrum Master approves each Sprint

Option A is correct because a forecast in Scrum is a prediction that is refined as the team learns more from empirical evidence. It is not a contract or a fixed commitment to scope and date (options B and C), and no one approves it as a plan each Sprint (option D).

Who forecasts how much work can be completed within a Sprint?
  • A. The Scrum Master
  • B. The Developers Correct answer
  • C. The stakeholders
  • D. The Product Owner

Option B is correct because the Developers forecast how much work they can complete in a Sprint, since they are the ones who do the work. The Product Owner orders the Product Backlog, the Scrum Master coaches, and stakeholders do not decide the Sprint forecast.

A Product Owner is asked how many Sprints the remaining Product Backlog will take. Which information gives the most reliable basis for a forecast?
  • A. What the Developers finished in past Sprints Correct answer
  • B. The date requested by the most senior sponsor
  • C. The size of the Scrum Team and its working hours
  • D. Estimates made when the items were first added

Option A is correct because empirical forecasting relies on observed data, and what the Developers actually finished in past Sprints is the most reliable basis. A requested date, team size and hours, or early estimates are assumptions or pressure rather than evidence of real throughput.

Who decides whether a finished Increment is released to users?
  • A. The stakeholders who attend the Sprint Review
  • B. The Product Owner Correct answer
  • C. The Developers who built it
  • D. The Scrum Master

Option B is correct because the Product Owner is accountable for maximising value and decides whether and when an Increment is released. Stakeholders give input at the Sprint Review, and the Developers and Scrum Master do not own the release decision.

Which two statements describe the Product Backlog according to the Scrum Guide? (Choose two.)
  • A. It is an emergent, ordered list of what is needed to improve the product Correct answer
  • B. It is the single source of work undertaken by the Scrum Team Correct answer
  • C. It is the Developers' plan for the Sprint, including how they will deliver the Increment
  • D. It is a fixed set of requirements approved before the first Sprint begins
  • E. It is a list of impediments that the Scrum Master tracks for the team

Options A and B are correct because the Scrum Guide defines the Product Backlog as an emergent, ordered list of what is needed to improve the product, and as the single source of work undertaken by the Scrum Team. Option C describes the Sprint Backlog, option D describes a fixed up-front requirements set that contradicts an emergent backlog, and option E confuses the Product Backlog with an impediment list.
