About this chapter

What this chapter covers

PRINCE2 Processes is 15% of the PRINCE2 7 Foundation exam, about nine of the 60 questions. It covers the seven processes: starting up a project, directing a project, initiating a project, controlling a stage, managing product delivery, managing a stage boundary and closing a project.

For each process the syllabus asks for three things only: its purpose, its objectives and its context (when it happens, who leads it and how it connects to the others). You are not asked to recall every activity inside a process at Foundation level.

Questions usually quote part of a purpose or an objective and ask which process it belongs to. Others ask which process happens first, which runs throughout the project, or which role carries it out.

How the topics fit together

Project mandateStarting up a projectInitiating a projectControlling a stageManaging a stage boundaryClosing a projectDirecting a projectproject boardInitiating a projectControlling a stageManaging product deliveryteam manager

Starting up a project happens before the project begins. Directing a project runs from the end of starting up to closure, and managing product delivery is where teams build the products.

Exam tip

Match the role to the process. The project board directs, the project manager starts up, initiates, controls stages, manages boundaries and closes, and team managers manage product delivery.
