About this chapter

What this chapter covers

SDLC Automation is about moving code from a commit to production with as little manual work as possible. The software development life cycle (SDLC) is the path a change takes through build, test, release and operation.

The chapter follows the first domain of the AWS Certified DevOps Engineer Professional DOP-C02 outline. It covers pipelines, build and test automation, artifact storage, and the deployment strategies for servers, containers and serverless code. The questions at this level ask you to pick the design that is safe, fast to roll back and low on operational effort.

How the topics fit together

The pages follow the life of a change.

PipelineCodePipelinerunsBuildCodeBuild and testsstoresArtifactsS3, ECR, CodeArtifactdeploysReleaseCodeDeploy, ECS, Lambda
  • CodePipeline orchestrates the stages and moves artifacts between them.
  • CodeBuild compiles, tests and packages using a buildspec file.
  • Testing adds gates at several points, from unit tests to post release canaries.
  • Artifact services keep bundles, packages, images and machine images versioned and safe.
  • Deployment strategies decide how new code replaces old code and how fast you can go back.
Exam tip

Most questions in this chapter hinge on one trade-off, such as speed against safety or cost against rollback time, so name the constraint before you pick a service.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with diagrams and example commands.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorise.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.

Build a small pipeline in a sandbox account if you can. Seeing a failed CodeBuild phase, an appspec hook error or an automatic rollback teaches the behavior far better than reading about it.
