About this chapter

What this chapter covers

This is the largest chapter of the course, because it covers the services themselves. It starts with how to deploy and operate in AWS, and with the global infrastructure that everything runs on.

It then walks through the main service categories: compute, databases, networking, storage, AI and machine learning, analytics, and a group of other categories such as application integration and developer tools.

For each service you need to know what it is for, and when to pick it over a similar one.

How the topics fit together

The pages follow a path from where things run to what runs on them.

Deploy and operatehow you workGlobal infrastructurewhere it runsCore servicescompute, data, networkHigher servicesAI, analytics, integration
  • Deploying and operating covers the console, CLI, SDKs and infrastructure as code.
  • Global infrastructure explains Regions, Availability Zones and edge locations.
  • Compute, database, network and storage are the core building blocks.
  • AI, machine learning and analytics build on stored data.
  • Integration, developer tools and other categories complete the picture.
Exam tip

For every service, write down one sentence in the form "Choose X when...". Most questions in this chapter are a service selection question in disguise.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with diagrams and tables.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorise.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.

Because there are many service names, review the tables on each page more than once. Space your reviews over several days, and test yourself by covering the right hand column.
