About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Application Automation is 20% of the ServiceNow Certified Application Developer exam. It covers how an application does work on its own once records exist: running processes, reading settings, reacting to events, running on a schedule and exchanging email.

The chapter has four parts: building, testing and debugging flows in Workflow Studio, creating and reading application properties, creating events, scheduled script executions and utility script includes, and sending and receiving email.

Questions are short scenarios, recall questions or code-reading questions: a requirement is described and you pick the feature, setting or script call that fits. Some are single-answer and some are multiple-select questions that state the count, such as "(Choose two.)". There are no exhibits.

How the topics fit together

Record change or scheduleFlow or eventstart the workScript includeshared logicPropertiessettings read at runtimeEmailnotify or receive

Something has to start the work: a record change, a schedule or an event. A flow or a script then does the work, using a utility script include for shared logic and application properties for values that admins should change without editing code. Email closes the loop by notifying people and by turning their replies into record updates.

  • Flow questions ask which trigger, action or flow logic fits and how to test a flow.
  • Property questions ask how to create a property and read it in a script.
  • Event and job questions ask whether something should run when a record changes or on a schedule.
  • Email questions ask which notification setting or inbound email action handles a case.
Exam tip

When a requirement says "on a schedule" or "every night", think scheduled job or a scheduled flow trigger. When it says "when something happens", think event, business rule or record trigger.
