About this chapter
What this chapter covers
The ITIL Four Dimensions of Product and Service Management is worth 10 percent of the ITIL Foundation (Version 5) exam, about 4 of the 40 questions. The four dimensions are perspectives that apply to every product and service: organizations and people, partners and suppliers, information and technology, and value streams and processes.
The syllabus asks you to list the dimensions, understand why each matters, explain why they must be considered together, and recognise the external PESTLE factors (political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental) that influence them.
How the topics fit together
Every product or service depends on people, partners, information and technology, and the flow of work. Neglecting any one of them weakens the whole, which is why ITIL asks for a holistic view.
In scenario questions, ask yourself what the described item is about: roles and culture (organizations and people), contracts and sourcing (partners and suppliers), data and tools (information and technology), or the flow of work (value streams and processes).
How to use these pages
Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.
- What it is: the idea in plain words.
- How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
- What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorise and how questions are phrased.
- Common mistakes: the classic traps.
- Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
