What it is
ITIL does not stand alone. DevOps is a culture and set of practices that brings development and operations together to deliver changes faster and more reliably. PRINCE2 is a structured method for managing projects. ITIL (Version 5) explains how both complement ITIL across the product and service lifecycle.
How it works
ITIL and DevOps
| DevOps contributes | ITIL contributes |
|---|---|
| Collaboration between development and operations | Guidance on managing services through their whole lifecycle |
| Automation to build, test and deploy changes | Governance, controls and service management practices |
| Frequent, small releases and fast feedback | Continual improvement and focus on value for consumers |
Working together:
- Both emphasise collaboration and fast feedback to deliver value.
- Agreed controls can be built into the delivery pipeline, so changes are checked automatically instead of waiting for manual approval.
- Operations should be involved in delivery and service information shared early, so support staff are not surprised by changes.
- ITIL's continual improvement helps DevOps teams turn lessons from live services into planned improvements.
Why project management matters in ITIL
A project is a temporary effort with a defined start and end that delivers a specific outcome. Project management plans and controls work that creates or changes services. It balances scope, time, cost, risk and quality, and gives the work control and accountability: named owners, stage reviews and formal sign-off.
Without it, work that crosses several teams can go live late, over budget or without delivering what was needed.
ITIL and PRINCE2

| PRINCE2 | ITIL |
|---|---|
| Manages the project that delivers change | Guides the ongoing management of the service |
| Temporary: ends when the project closes | Continues for the life of the service |
| Structured way to plan and control project work | Guidance on creating, delivering and improving value |
When the project closes, it hands over the service, and ITIL practices continue to run and improve it. Example: a data centre migration is managed as a PRINCE2 project, and ITIL guides the migrated services afterwards.
PRINCE2 governs the project; ITIL guides the service. DevOps speeds and automates delivery; ITIL manages the service around it.
How the exam asks about this
- "An organization using ITIL introduces DevOps. How should the two be viewed?" As complementary, applied together.
- "Why is project management important in ITIL?" It plans and controls work that creates or changes services.
- "A migration with a start, end and budget, followed by ongoing operation." PRINCE2 for the migration, ITIL for the services afterwards.
What to remember for the exam
- DevOps: collaboration, automation and fast, reliable delivery of changes.
- ITIL and DevOps are complementary; controls can be built into pipelines.
- A project is a temporary effort to deliver a defined outcome.
- Project management balances scope, time, cost, risk and quality.
- PRINCE2 manages the project; ITIL manages the service over its life.
Do not choose an option saying DevOps or PRINCE2 replaces ITIL. The syllabus stresses that they work together.
Common mistakes
Treating ITIL and DevOps as rivals. They complement each other.
Expecting ITIL to replace a project method. PRINCE2 provides the structured project method; ITIL guides the service.
Studying PRINCE2 in depth. The exam tests how it fits with ITIL, not PRINCE2's own details.
Check yourself
How should ITIL and DevOps be viewed when used together?
As complementary approaches that can be applied together.
What is a project in ITIL terms?
A temporary effort with a defined start and end that delivers a specific outcome.
How do PRINCE2 and ITIL work together when a new service is introduced?
PRINCE2 manages the project that delivers the service; ITIL practices then run and improve it.
