About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Data Center Network Basics is 5% of the Huawei HCIA-Datacom H12-811 exam. It covers how the data center evolved from rooms of standalone servers to virtualized and cloud data centers, and the basics of the data center network (DCN): the traffic it carries, the traditional three-layer design, the spine and leaf design and the VXLAN overlay.

Questions are single-answer, multiple-answer without a stated count, true/false, drag and drop and typed fill-in-the-blank, often "Which of the following statements is true?". Some show a topology figure and ask which layer or role a device plays.

It has 2 outline topics, and one page covers them.

How the topics fit together

The network design follows the computing model. As servers became virtual machines and then cloud resources, traffic patterns changed, and the network had to change with them.

Standalone serversVirtualizationVMs move between hostsCloud DCresources on demandNew DCNspine and leaf, VXLAN

Learn the evolution first, then the network answer to each change. Most questions test why spine and leaf replaced the three-layer tree and what VXLAN adds.

Exam tip

Fix three facts firmly: east-west traffic dominates in a modern data center, every leaf connects to every spine, and the VXLAN VNI is 24 bits, which gives about 16 million segments against 4094 usable VLANs.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.

Try to name the next step for each short scenario before reading the answer. The exam often asks what to do first, or which tool fits.
