About this chapter
What this chapter covers
Security operations is the daily work of watching, finding and responding. It covers the data that makes monitoring possible, the analysis of vulnerabilities and attacks, threat intelligence and hunting, and the evidence used in incident response.
It follows Domain 4 of the CompTIA SecurityX CAS-005 outline. The domain has four syllabus topics, and seven pages cover them because monitoring, vulnerability work and incident analysis each need more than one.
How the topics fit together
The pages follow the life of a security event: data arrives, analysis finds weaknesses and attacks, intelligence and hunting look ahead, and incident work deals with what has already happened.
- Log sources and alerting turn raw data into signals that people can act on.
- Vulnerability analysis and attack types show where the organization is weak and how attackers exploit it.
- Threat intelligence and hunting use outside and inside knowledge to find attackers early.
- Incident response and artifacts preserve evidence and reconstruct what happened.
Operations questions often ask what to do first. Preserve volatile evidence, validate a finding, or contain the spread before you reach for a fix.
How to use these pages
Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.
- What it is: the idea in plain words.
- How it works: the mechanism, with diagrams, tables and example commands.
- What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize.
- Common mistakes: the classic traps.
- Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
For each page, practise reading a short piece of evidence, such as a log line, a score or an email header, and say what it proves and what it does not.
