About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Network Implementation is about building and configuring the parts of a working network. It covers how routers and switches forward traffic, how wireless networks are designed and how the equipment is installed.

The chapter follows the second exam domain. It has four syllabus topics: routing technologies, switching technologies and features, wireless devices and technologies, and physical installation factors.

How the topics fit together

A packet starts on a switch port or a wireless client, crosses the switching layer, is routed to another network, and travels over cabling in a room that must be powered and cooled.

  • Routing covers static and dynamic routes, route selection, NAT and gateway redundancy.
  • Switching covers VLANs, trunks, spanning tree, link aggregation and port features.
  • Wireless covers standards, bands, channels, security and access point design.
  • Physical installation covers distribution rooms, racks, airflow, power and environment.
Exam tip

Many scenario questions combine topics, for example a VLAN that cannot reach another VLAN. Decide first whether the problem is switching, routing or physical.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with diagrams, tables and example commands.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.

Read the pages in order the first time. Then use the exam facts and the questions for revision.
