About this chapter
What this chapter covers
Technical work only changes an organisation if the right people understand it. Reporting and communication turn scan results, alerts and investigations into clear information that managers, owners and executives can act on.
The chapter covers two areas. The first is vulnerability management reporting, with reports, dashboards and the communication needed to get fixes done. The second is incident reporting, with documentation, post incident reviews and the metrics that show whether the security team is improving.
This is the smallest chapter of the Cybersecurity Analyst (CySA+) CS0-004 exam, but its ideas appear in scenario questions across all domains.
How the topics fit together
Both areas follow the same path from raw facts to action.
- Vulnerability reporting presents findings, priorities and trends, and deals with the reasons a fix may be delayed.
- Incident reporting records the timeline, the cause and the actions, and shapes a blameless review.
- Metrics such as detection time, response time and remediation effectiveness show whether the changes worked.
Always ask who the audience is. The best answer to a reporting question is usually the one that gives that audience exactly what it needs to decide or act.
How to use these pages
Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.
- What it is: the idea in plain words.
- How it works: the mechanism, with diagrams, tables and examples.
- What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorise.
- Common mistakes: the classic traps.
- Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
Practise the small time calculations on the metrics page, since a question may give timestamps and ask for a mean.
