About this chapter
What this chapter covers
Networking is about the routing protocols that run a provider network, and the features that keep them stable.
It covers the two IGPs, IS-IS and OSPF, and BGP, which carries customer and internet routes. It also covers the policy tools that control those routes, and a method for fixing them when they break.
The last pages cover IPv6 transition and high availability.
How the topics fit together
The IGPs build the internal map, BGP rides on top of it, and policy and resilience features shape the result.
The topics build on each other in this way:
- IS-IS and OSPF give every router the paths inside the network, and BGP needs them to reach next hops.
- BGP carries the routes between autonomous systems, and its path selection decides which one wins.
- Routing policy changes what is accepted, advertised and preferred.
- Troubleshooting applies the same checks to all three protocols.
- IPv6 transition keeps IPv4 services running as networks move to IPv6.
- High availability keeps all of this running through failures.
Many commands differ between IOS XR and IOS XE. XR stages changes until commit, and XR eBGP needs a route policy before it passes routes.
How to use these pages
Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.
- What it is: the idea in plain words.
- How it works: the mechanism, with diagrams and example commands.
- What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorise.
- Common mistakes: the classic traps.
- Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
Build a small lab with three or four routers if you can. Seeing a neighbour stuck in a state, and then fixing it, teaches more than reading about it.
