About this chapter
What this chapter covers
When something changes or breaks, the right response should start by itself. This chapter covers how to route and process events, how to turn them into configuration changes, and how to find the cause when a system or application fails.
It follows the fifth domain of the AWS Certified DevOps Engineer Professional DOP-C02 outline. The three outline topics are managing event sources to process, notify and act, implementing configuration changes in response to events, and troubleshooting system and application failures.
How the topics fit together
An incident usually follows one path from signal to fix.
- EventBridge matches events and sends them to targets, across accounts and Regions.
- SNS, SQS and Lambda deliver notification, buffering and processing, with retries and dead letter queues.
- Remediation changes configuration automatically using Config, Systems Manager Automation and Lambda.
- Troubleshooting gives you the failure patterns of deployments, infrastructure, applications, permissions and networks.
In scenario questions, decide whether the need is to notify, to process or to fix, because that choice usually separates SNS, SQS or Lambda, and SSM Automation.
How to use these pages
Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.
- What it is: the idea in plain words.
- How it works: the mechanism, with diagrams and example commands.
- What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorise.
- Common mistakes: the classic traps.
- Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
The troubleshooting pages are tables of symptom and likely cause. Read them as patterns, and practice by breaking a test stack on purpose and finding the evidence.
