About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Network Technology Basics is 10% of the Huawei HCIA-Cloud Computing H13-511 exam. It covers IPv4 addressing and subnetting, the basic network concepts and reference models, how Layer 2 switches forward frames and separate traffic with VLANs, and how routers choose routes.

Questions are single-answer, multiple-answer without a stated count, true/false, drag and drop and typed fill-in-the-blank, often "Which of the following statements is true?". This exam has no exhibit figures, so every question is plain text, and subnet calculations are common.

It has 4 outline topics, and two pages cover them.

How the topics fit together

An IP address says which network a host is on. Inside one network, switches deliver frames by MAC address and VLANs split one switch into several broadcast domains. Between networks, routers forward packets using their routing tables.

The FusionCompute network virtualization topic reuses all of this: distributed virtual switches, port groups with VLAN IDs, and uplinks to physical trunk ports.

Exam tip

Practice subnetting until it is quick. For any prefix, know the block size, the network address, the broadcast address and the usable host count, which is 2 to the power of the host bits, minus 2.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.

Work each address example on paper before reading the answer. The exam often gives an address with a prefix and asks for its network, broadcast or host count.
