About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Cloud Computing Basics is 5% of the Huawei HCIA-Cloud Computing H13-511 exam. It covers the IT trends that led to cloud computing, the standard definition with its five characteristics, the IaaS, PaaS and SaaS service models, the deployment models, and the main technologies a cloud is built from.

Questions are single-answer, multiple-answer without a stated count, true/false, drag and drop and typed fill-in-the-blank, often "Which of the following statements is true?". This exam has no exhibit figures, so every question is plain text.

It has 3 outline topics, and one page covers them.

How the topics fit together

IT trends explain why enterprises left one-server-per-application IT behind. The definition and models describe what a cloud is and how it is offered, and the mainstream technologies show what sits underneath.

Everything later in the course, from FusionCompute to FusionAccess, is one of these technologies in practice. Learn the vocabulary here and the later chapters read faster.

Exam tip

Memorize the five characteristics as a set: on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity and measured service. Multiple-answer questions often mix them with a plausible fake such as "fixed capacity".

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.

For each service you meet, say which service model it belongs to and who manages the operating system. The exam often asks where the line between provider and user falls.
