About this chapter
What this chapter covers
Implementing observability practices and troubleshooting issues is about 25% of the Google Cloud Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer exam. Together with CI/CD it is the largest section, and it is about getting the right telemetry, at a sensible cost, and using it to find problems fast.
It covers instrumenting and collecting telemetry (Ops Agent, OpenTelemetry, Cloud Audit Logs, VPC Flow Logs, Cloud Service Mesh, Managed Service for Prometheus, synthetic monitors, custom and log-based metrics, log cost optimization), managing and analyzing logs (Logs Explorer and the Logging query language, routing and retention, redacting sensitive data, Gemini Cloud Assist), metrics, dashboards and alerts (Metrics Explorer, dashboards with PromQL, alerting policies, third-party notification tools), distributed tracing (OpenTelemetry, trace waterfalls and spans, trace IDs in logs) and troubleshooting infrastructure, pipeline, application, observability and latency issues.
The exam has 50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions in 2 hours. Questions here often describe missing data, a noisy or silent alert, or a slow request and ask which tool or setting finds or fixes it, ending "What should you do?".
How the topics fit together
Telemetry you never collected cannot be analyzed, and telemetry you collect without control becomes a large bill. Logs, metrics and traces each answer different questions, and the best troubleshooting joins them through shared trace IDs and labels.
Match the signal to the question. Metrics say something is wrong, traces say where in the request path, logs say why, and profiles say which code is using the CPU or memory.
How to use these pages
Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.
- What it is: the idea in plain words.
- How it works: the mechanism, with tables and code examples.
- What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorise and how questions are phrased.
- Common mistakes: the classic traps.
- Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
