About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Multi-Agent and Long-Horizon Task Design is 13% of the Databricks Context Engineer Associate exam. It covers how context moves between agents, and how a single task that runs for many steps keeps its context under control.

The chapter has two parts. The first is shared context: the failures that appear when sub-agents do not see what the coordinator knows, and the dispatch and propagation changes that fix them. The second is structure: what sub-agents should return, where agent boundaries belong, and which long-horizon strategy fits a task's dependency structure.

Questions are single-answer and multiple-selection ("Which TWO ...?") questions, almost all scenarios that describe an agent, a trace, a configuration or MLflow evaluation results and ask for the diagnosis or the remediation that meets a stated constraint. There are no exhibits.

How the topics fit together

Coordinatordecomposes the taskDispatchtask plus shared contextSub agentswork in clean windowsCondensed resultsback to coordinator

A coordinating agent splits the work and sends each sub-agent its subtask. What travels with that message decides whether the sub-agents agree with each other, and what comes back decides whether the coordinator's own window stays manageable.

  • Shared context questions describe inconsistent or conflicting outputs and ask what context the sub-agents were missing.
  • Dispatch questions ask how to give sub-agents the coordinator's current understanding without enlarging their windows.
  • Output design questions ask how sub-agents should report so the orchestrator does not saturate.
  • Boundary questions ask whether boundaries are drawn too finely or too coarsely.
  • Long-horizon questions ask which strategy fits the task's dependency structure and why the original one failed.
Exam tip

Before choosing a fix, decide whether the problem is context that is missing (sub-agents disagree or use stale figures) or context that is too large (a window keeps growing). The two need opposite changes, and distractors often offer the fix for the other one.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize and how questions are phrased.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
