About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Using Spark Connect to Deploy Applications is 5% of the Databricks Associate Developer for Apache Spark exam, the smallest weight on the exam. It covers what Spark Connect is and where the driver runs in each deployment mode.

The chapter has one topic page. It explains the Spark Connect client and server, what its thin client can and cannot do, and the difference between client, cluster and local deployment.

Questions are single-answer multiple choice. Many are short conceptual scenarios, and a few show a line of PySpark such as a session built with remote(), or a spark-submit option, and ask what it means. There are no exhibits.

How the topics fit together

With Spark Connect your application is a light client that sends plans to a server next to the cluster. Deploy modes answer a different question: where the driver of a classic application runs.

  • Spark Connect questions ask what the protocol is, what it enables and what it does not support.
  • Deploy mode questions ask which mode puts the driver on the submitting machine, inside the cluster or in one local process.
Exam tip

Tie each mode to its driver location. Client means the driver is where you submitted, cluster means the driver is inside the cluster, and local means everything in one JVM.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize and how questions are phrased.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
