About this chapter
What this chapter covers
Engagement management is everything around the technical work: agreeing what may be tested, staying lawful, talking to the client and delivering a useful report.
It follows the first domain of the CompTIA PenTest+ PT0-003 outline. The domain is about professional practice, so questions are usually scenarios that ask what a good tester does next.
The chapter has four outline topics, and they are spread across five pages because the report topic is large.
How the topics fit together
The pages follow the life of an engagement, from the first meeting to the final report.
- Scoping sets the targets, the windows and the limits in writing.
- Legal and ethical rules make sure the testing is authorised and the data is handled properly.
- Collaboration keeps the client informed and escalates urgent problems.
- Reporting turns the technical results into decisions for leaders and fixes for engineers.
In scenario questions, the best answer usually protects the client first: stay in scope, get written approval for changes, and report urgent issues at once.
How to use these pages
Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.
- What it is: the idea in plain words.
- How it works: the mechanism, with diagrams and example commands.
- What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorise.
- Common mistakes: the classic traps.
- Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
This chapter has no commands to practise. Instead, read each scenario carefully and ask who has the authority, what is in writing and who must be told.
