About this chapter
What this chapter covers
Management and Troubleshooting is about finding out what Secure Firewall is doing, and fixing it when it is not doing what you expect.
It covers the troubleshooting tools in the Secure Firewall Management Center (FMC) and on the device CLI, the packet level tools, and the dashboards, events and reports. It ends by comparing the tools that can manage a firewall.
The chapter follows the Management and Troubleshooting objectives for the CCNP 300-710 SNCF exam, which are 3.1 to 3.5 in the question bank.
How the topics fit together
Troubleshooting moves from a wide view to a narrow one, and the reporting topics give you the data for the wide view.
The first page gives you a method and the main commands. The next two pages go deeper, from packet capture and Packet Tracer to firewall engine debug and system support trace, which show what the Snort engine decided.
The dashboards, events and network map are the other half. They show patterns over time, point you to the connections or hosts that matter, and give you reports to share.
The last page compares FDM, the FMC and cloud management, because the tool you use changes how you work.
The CLI examples use the Secure Firewall Threat Defense prompt, which is a greater than sign.
How to use these pages
Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.
- What it is: the idea in plain words.
- How it works: the mechanism, with diagrams and example commands.
- What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorise.
- Common mistakes: the usual traps.
- Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
Try to run each command on a lab firewall as you read. Seeing real output makes the troubleshooting pages much easier to remember.
