About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Testing and Deployment is 22% of the AWS Certified Developer Associate DVA-C03 exam. It covers how a developer packages code, keeps configuration out of it, tests it, and ships it through pipelines with a safe way back.

Questions are developer scenarios with single-answer and multiple-response formats. Multiple-response questions state the count, such as "Which TWO". Expect discriminators like LEAST operational overhead or MOST secure. There are no exhibits, so you read short text scenarios and pick the service, setting or command.

How the topics fit together

A change moves left to right through the same path every time. Each page covers one step of it.

Packagezip, layer, imageConfigureper environmentTestlocal, mock, eventsPipelinebuild and approveDeploystrategy and rollback
  • Packaging decides the artifact format and its size limits.
  • Configuration keeps one artifact usable in every environment.
  • Testing catches defects before the cloud, using SAM, CDK, mocks and test events.
  • Containers and IaC describe where the code runs and how the stack is created.
  • Pipelines automate the path, and deployment strategies limit the damage of a bad release.
Exam tip

When two answers both work, look for the one that is automated, repeatable and keeps secrets and environment values out of the code.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with diagrams and examples.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.

Focus on the trigger words in each scenario, such as canary, rollback, mock, layer, stage variable and approval. They point straight to the service or setting.
