About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Wireless Tools is about the built in utilities that let you see and measure the radio environment.

RouterOS includes tools for finding networks, measuring channel use, viewing raw energy, watching traffic, aiming antennas and capturing frames. You use them before a link goes live and again when it misbehaves.

The chapter follows one syllabus topic that lists six tools. It has three pages, and each page groups tools that are used for similar jobs.

How the topics fit together

The tools answer questions in a natural order, from a wide view to a narrow one.

Scanwho is aroundthenFrequency usagehow busythenSpectral toolswhat energythenAlign and snifferaim and capture

The pages follow that order:

  • Scan and frequency usage show the networks that exist and how loaded each channel is.
  • Spectral scan, spectral history and snooper show raw energy, interference and traffic by channel.
  • Align and sniffer help you aim an antenna and capture frames to study a fault.

Most of these tools take over the radio while they run. For that reason the pages often suggest a spare radio or a quiet period.

Note

A tool is only as good as the question you ask it. Decide first what you want to learn, then pick the tool that answers it.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with diagrams and example commands.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorise.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.

The syllabus marks this topic as a lab. Work with a real device if you can. Run each tool, look at the output, and try to explain what every column or flag means in words.

Compare tools too. Many exam questions ask which tool answers a given problem, so build a mental table of tool and purpose.
