About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Network Security Concepts and Specifications is 5% of the Huawei HCIA-Security H12-711 exam. It covers what network security protects, how the field grew from communication security into cyberspace security, the trends shaping future defenses, and the standards and laws that tell organizations what "secure enough" means.

Questions are single-answer, multiple-answer without a stated count, true/false, drag and drop and typed fill-in-the-blank, often "Which of the following statements is true?". In this chapter they are mostly definitions: which property a scenario breaks, or which standard or regulation a statement describes.

It has 3 outline topics, and one page covers them.

How the topics fit together

The definition tells you what must be protected, the trends tell you why the old perimeter model is no longer enough, and the standards turn both into requirements an organization can be checked against.

The later chapters build on this one. The four protection areas of MLPS 2.0 return as the structure of the threats chapter.

Exam tip

Fix the core facts firmly: confidentiality, integrity and availability are the CIA triad, ISO/IEC 27001 defines an information security management system (ISMS) commonly run as a PDCA cycle, MLPS 2.0 has five protection levels, and GDPR protects personal data of people in the EU.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.

For each short scenario, name the security property or the standard involved before reading the answer. The exam often describes an incident and asks which property it breaks.
