About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Machine Learning Overview is 20% of the Huawei HCIA-AI H13-311 exam. It covers what a machine learning algorithm is, the types of learning, the end-to-end machine learning process, key methods such as gradient descent, hyperparameter search and cross-validation, and the common algorithms from linear regression to k-means.

Questions are single-answer, multiple-answer without a stated count, true/false and typed fill-in-the-blank, often "Which of the following statements is true?". This exam has no exhibit figures and no drag and drop, so every question is plain text, and small metric calculations are common.

It has 5 outline topics, and two pages cover them.

How the topics fit together

The first page explains what learning from data means, the four learning types and the steps of a project, from data collection to deployment and evaluation. The second page covers the methods that make training work and the algorithms you choose between.

Deep learning in the next chapter reuses all of this: loss functions, gradient descent, overfitting and train, validation and test sets.

Exam tip

Learn the confusion matrix by heart. Questions often give TP, FP, FN and TN and ask for precision, recall, accuracy or F1, so practice the formulas until they are quick.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.

For each algorithm you meet, say whether it is supervised or unsupervised and whether it does classification, regression or clustering. The exam often hides a wrong pairing in one option.
