About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Infrastructure as Code (IaC) with Terraform is the opening chapter of the Terraform Associate (004) exam. It covers the ideas behind the tool rather than its commands: what IaC means, what teams gain from it, and why Terraform suits many clouds and services at once.

The chapter has two parts: the definition and advantages of IaC, then how Terraform uses providers to manage multi-cloud, hybrid cloud and service-agnostic workflows with one language and one workflow.

Questions are single-answer, multiple-answer ("Pick the 2 correct responses below") and true or false statements, mostly direct recall of concepts and behavior plus short HCL snippets that open "Consider the following configuration snippet:". There are no exhibits.

How the topics fit together

Manual changesclicks and scriptsIaCinfrastructure in codeTerraformdeclarative HCLProvidersany cloud or service

IaC replaces manual console work with code you can version, review and repeat. Terraform is a declarative IaC tool, and its providers let the same workflow reach public clouds, on-premises platforms and SaaS services.

  • IaC questions ask what IaC is and how declarative differs from imperative.
  • Advantage questions ask which benefits IaC brings, such as versioning, repeatability and less drift.
  • Workflow questions ask how one Terraform configuration manages several clouds or services.
Exam tip

When an option says Terraform makes one configuration "cloud agnostic" so the same resource runs on any cloud, it is wrong. Terraform gives you one language and one workflow, but each provider has its own resource types.
