About this chapter
What this chapter covers
Security Operations and Management is 5% of the EC-Council CSA 312-39 exam. It covers the principles of security management and where security operations fits, what a Security Operations Center (SOC) is and does, the SOC workflow and its people, processes and technology, the main SOC models, SOC maturity and evolution, and the KPIs, challenges and best practices that keep a SOC effective.
Questions are single-answer multiple choice, often "Which of the following" and short named scenarios. You are asked to name a SOC role, model, workflow stage or metric from a short description.
It has 6 outline topics, and three pages cover them.
How the topics fit together
The chapter moves from why a SOC exists to how it is built and then to how it is measured.
The first page sets the purpose of the SOC. The second shows how it runs and how it can be staffed, and the third shows how its quality is judged.
Learn the tiers by task, not by title. Tier I triages alerts, Tier II investigates and responds, Tier III hunts and handles the hardest cases, and the SOC manager runs the team.
How to use these pages
Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.
- What it is: the idea in plain words.
- How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
- What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize.
- Common mistakes: the classic traps.
- Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
Try to name the next step for each short scenario before reading the answer. The exam often asks what to do first, or which tool fits.
