About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Proactive Threat Detection is 12% of the EC-Council CSA 312-39 exam. It covers the fundamentals of threat intelligence, its four types and the strategy behind it, intelligence sources, threat intelligence platforms (TIPs), the intelligence driven SOC and its use cases in incident response, and threat hunting: why it matters, its frameworks, and hunting with PowerShell, YARA and other tools.

Questions are single-answer multiple choice, often "Which of the following" and short named scenarios. You are asked what an indicator or intelligence report means for the SOC and which type, source, framework or tool fits the next step.

It has 9 outline topics, and five pages cover them.

How the topics fit together

Intelligence tells the SOC what to look for, and hunting goes looking for it before an alert fires.

The first three pages turn raw data into useful intelligence and put it to work. The last two pages cover the proactive search for threats that slipped past automated detection.

Exam tip

Learn the four intelligence types by audience. Strategic goes to executives, tactical to security managers, operational to incident responders, technical to SOC tools and analysts.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.

Try to name the next step for each short scenario before reading the answer. The exam often asks what to do first, or which tool fits.
