About this chapter
What this chapter covers
Troubleshooting, Monitoring, and Optimization is 10% of the Databricks Data Engineer Associate exam. It covers how you notice that a pipeline is unhealthy or slow, find the cause and apply the right fix.
The chapter has two parts: monitoring Lakeflow Jobs through run history, statuses and the task graph, and diagnosing performance and compute problems with the Spark UI, Liquid Clustering, predictive optimization and the compute event log.
Questions are mostly short scenarios in which the stated requirement (latency, cost, governance, data volume) decides the answer. They are single-answer multiple choice, with short SQL or PySpark shown as text. There are no exhibits.
How the topics fit together
Monitoring tells you that something changed and where. Diagnosis tells you why: a skewed stage, a large shuffle, spilling to disk, a library clash or a cluster that never started. The fix then matches the cause.
- Monitoring questions ask which view shows duration trends, what a status means and how to find the task that blocked the rest.
- Spark UI questions ask which metric shows skew, shuffle or spill.
- Optimization questions ask what Liquid Clustering and predictive optimization do and where they apply.
- Failure questions ask how to diagnose startup failures, library conflicts and out of memory errors.
Read the symptom carefully. "One task takes far longer than the others" points to skew; "spill" points to memory per task; "the cluster never reached running" points to the event log, not the Spark UI.
How to use these pages
Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.
- What it is: the idea in plain words.
- How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
- What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize and how questions are phrased.
- Common mistakes: the classic traps.
- Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
