About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Foundations of Context Engineering is 16% of the Databricks Context Engineer Associate exam. It covers the ideas the rest of the exam builds on: what goes wrong when an agent's context is badly managed, and how you keep the context small, relevant and consistent.

The chapter has three parts: naming the four context failure modes from a trace and picking the technique that fixes each one, managing the attention budget so long interactions do not degrade, and choosing a reasoning mode and the right Databricks product (Unity Catalog, Lakebase, MCP, MLflow 3) for a scenario.

Questions are single-answer and multiple-selection ("Which TWO ...?") questions. Almost all are scenarios that describe an agent, a trace, a configuration or MLflow evaluation results and ask for the diagnosis or the remediation that meets a stated constraint. There are no exhibits.

How the topics fit together

Agent tracewhat entered the contextDiagnosefailure mode or attention drainIntervenetrim, compact, scope, retrieve laterMeasureMLflow 3 evaluation

You read the trace to see what the model actually had in its window. You name the problem, apply the smallest change that fixes it, and confirm the change with MLflow evaluation instead of trusting a single run.

  • Failure mode questions give a trace and ask whether it shows poisoning, distraction, confusion or clash.
  • Technique questions ask which context management change most directly fixes a described failure.
  • Attention budget questions ask which context element is crowding out the task and what to cut.
  • Long context questions ask where quality starts to fall and which intervention restores it.
  • Stack and reasoning questions ask which Databricks product or reasoning mode fits the requirement.
Exam tip

Look for the constraint in the last sentence of the scenario. "Without discarding retrieved facts", "without a larger model" or "lowest token cost" usually removes three of the four options.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize and how questions are phrased.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
