About this chapter

What this chapter covers

Troubleshooting and Tuning Apache Spark DataFrame API Applications is 10% of the Databricks Associate Developer for Apache Spark exam. It covers how to make a slow or failing job faster and how to find out why it failed.

The chapter has two parts: tuning partitions, shuffles and skew together with Adaptive Query Execution (AQE), and reading logs and monitoring tools to diagnose out of memory errors and idle clusters.

Questions are single-answer multiple choice. Many show a short PySpark snippet or a symptom (one slow task, thousands of tiny tasks, a driver crash) and ask which call, setting or log fixes it. There are no exhibits.

How the topics fit together

Symptomslow, skewed, OOMDiagnoseSpark UI and logsTunepartitions, joins, AQEVerifytask times and spill

You start from a symptom, find the cause in the Spark UI or the driver and executor logs, apply the matching fix, and check the result in the same places.

  • Partitioning questions ask when to use repartition, coalesce or a partition count setting.
  • Skew and shuffle questions ask how to spot one oversized task and how to avoid or reduce a shuffle.
  • AQE questions ask what it changes at run time and which problems it solves for you.
  • Log questions ask which log or UI page shows an out of memory error or an underused cluster.
Exam tip

Match the symptom to its location. One task far slower than the rest means skew, many tiny tasks means too many partitions, and a crash on collect means the driver ran out of memory.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with tables and examples.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize and how questions are phrased.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
