About this chapter

What this chapter covers

This chapter is 15% of the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional SAP-C03 exam. It covers two linked jobs: moving and modernizing workloads at scale, and keeping them recoverable once they run on AWS.

The migration half runs from discovery and wave planning through rehosting, data migration, replatforming, refactoring and mainframe modernization. The continuity half covers DR strategies against RTO and RPO, continuous replication, multi-Region failover, backup governance, ransomware protection and proving recovery with tests.

Questions are long multi-account scenarios. Most are single answer, and multiple-response questions state the count, such as "Which TWO".

Discriminators like MOST cost-effective, LEAST operational overhead or lowest RTO decide between options that all work. There are no exhibits.

How the topics fit together

Migration moves the workload in, modernization reduces its operating burden, and continuity design plus testing keeps it running.

  • Migration starts with dependency data, then moves servers and data with minimal downtime.
  • Modernization picks the lowest level of change that meets the goal: replatform before refactor.
  • Disaster recovery picks the cheapest strategy that meets both RTO and RPO.
  • Data protection keeps immutable copies in a separate account so ransomware cannot erase them.
  • Testing turns estimated recovery times into measured ones.
Exam tip

In every DR question, write down the stated RTO, RPO and budget first. The correct answer meets both targets at the lowest cost, not the best possible recovery at any price.

How to use these pages

Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.

  • What it is: the idea in plain words.
  • How it works: the mechanism, with diagrams and examples.
  • What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorize.
  • Common mistakes: the classic traps.
  • Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.

Focus on the trigger words in each scenario, such as minimal downtime, RPO of seconds, immutable, operator approved and LEAST operational overhead. They point straight to the answer.
