About this chapter
What this chapter covers
Resilience means a workload keeps working, or comes back quickly, when something fails or demand changes. This chapter links the business numbers (availability, RTO and RPO) to the AWS designs that meet them.
It follows the third domain of the AWS Certified DevOps Engineer Professional DOP-C02 outline. The three outline topics are high availability, scalability, and automated recovery to meet recovery time and recovery point targets.
How the topics fit together
The pages start inside one Region and end with failure of a whole Region.
- Compute and DNS give you redundancy across Availability Zones with health driven routing.
- Data stores need their own replication and failover design, and the options differ per service.
- Scaling adds capacity with demand, and decoupling lets tiers scale independently.
- Backup and DR strategy turn RTO and RPO targets into a cost and complexity choice.
- Automated recovery removes manual steps from failover and proves the design with tests.
Always translate the scenario into an RTO and an RPO first, then pick the cheapest design that meets both.
How to use these pages
Each topic page has the same shape, so you can skim for what you need.
- What it is: the idea in plain words.
- How it works: the mechanism, with diagrams and example commands.
- What to remember for the exam: the facts to memorise.
- Common mistakes: the classic traps.
- Check yourself: three questions to test your understanding.
Pay attention to the words that separate similar answers, such as synchronous against asynchronous replication, single AZ against Multi AZ, and automatic against manual promotion.
